Description
This watercolor painting captures a small shipwreck boat washed ashore, beached & surrounded by seaweed.
I came upon this boat in Playa Mujeres Cancun, Mexico. The ocean color was a luminous pale green with the sun glowing through a blanket of gray rain clouds.
"El Alecrin", the boat's name, was painted on the hull along with its origin, Nueva Gerona, Cuba.
Wet feet, dry feet. The United States welcomes Cuban refugees once they touch American soil, but, if refugees are still at sea, the US coast guard turns them away. "Wet feet" is a term for those caught at sea. "Dry feet" is the term for those who make it to shore & qualify for U.S. entry. "Dusty-feet" is the term for those who arrive in Mexico by boat then cross the US border legally & apply for permanent residency.
We can't choose where we're born. Welcome to America.
