This watercolor painting captures The Basilica Cistern located below the streets of Istanbul, Turkey.It's an ancient underground reservoir on the site of an old basilica. It was built to store water for the Byzantine Empire palace & nearby buildings. Water was delivered by immense aqueducts & this cistern was a major reservoir of Constantinople. Ornate thirty-foot pillars from Roman ruins support a vaulted brick ceiling. This "sunken palace" fell into disuse long ago but was recently restored with lighting & walkways for tourists.This underground ornate architecture was so amazing to see!-Thank you for shopping CarlinArtWatercolor.
