This dog portrait watercolor painting captures a Black & Tan Coonhound, the original First Dog of America, as George Washington had several of these pups.
It's very easy to fall in love with this puppy, with those soulful eyes, big floppy ears, wet nose & a cute little pout on its floppy muzzle.
Early American colonial settlers valued this breed's ability to track a scent. The canines' acute sense of smell is aided by droopy ears that help waft scents up to their nose.
These brave dogs have tracked down bears, deer & mountain lions, YIKES!
They also make great family pet companions.
