This watercolor painting captures a quaint scene in Charleston, South Carolina. Two women stand outside a brick patio, looking through a green wrought iron gate with a lantern overhead. This yellow Single House is a three-story traditional home. The building architecture style was popular on narrow lots along the streets. Windows at each end allow breezes to flow straight through. The piazzas (porches to native Charlestonians) offer shade from the hot afternoon sun. Traditionally blue paint is used on balcony ceilings, window frames, shutters & doors. Superstition is that the color keeps evil spirits away, but it was the lime used in the original paint that repelled the bugs.This was a commission to commemorate a mother & daughter's vacation.
