Description

Inspiration of Mermaid legends, Manatees are gentle giants of the sea. This watercolor painting captures this friendly mammal in its natural habitat, the shallow coastal waters of Florida.

They can’t turn their head so they turn their entire body to look around & play with swimmers.

These herbivores feed on seagrass, mangrove leaves & algae.

Also known as Sea Cows, they are actually related to the elephant.

Interestingly, they close their eyes in a circular motion like a camera aperture! Manatees grow to an average of 10 ft long. They're gray in color & have a paddle-shaped tail to propel & steer with their 2 side flippers.

I was commissioned to paint this gentle creature to commemorate my client's swim with this animal.

That adorable nose & whiskers makes me smile!
