This impressionist watercolor painting captures the Hollywood Sign, a famous American Landmark in Los Angeles California. The history of these huge letters reads like a movie script: 1923 "HOLLYWOODLAND" was 1st put on Mount Lee in the Hills of the Santa Monica Mountains to advertise a real estate development. Often in cinema, this temporary sign became an internationally recognized symbol & allowed to stay. 1940s A caretaker lost control of his car, he survived but the letter "H" toppled. The "H" was replaced & "Land" was removed. 1970s Pranksters altered the letters to "HOLLYWEED" (marijuana laws). The aging wood & sheet metal sign lost some of the first & third “O” & all of the “D”. An arsonist set fire to the bottom of the second “L”. The old sign was replaced with a new steel & concrete sign. 1980s For Pope John Paul II visit, letters were changed to "HOLYWOOD".
