This watercolor painting captures the famous landmark on Greece's Naxos Island. The Portara is a massive 2,500-year-old marble doorway. It's the entrance to an unfinished & demolished temple named after the Greek god Apollo.The Portara stands on the ancient hill of Palatia. The Mediterranean Sea has risen since ancient times & the hill is now a separate little island connected to Naxos by a causeway. These ruins are surrounded by the deep blue Agean sea & distant Greek islands.
