This watercolor painting captures a Samoan woman making traditional Polynesian tapa cloth in her living room. She's sitting on the floor of her fale home where posts support the roof & there are no walls.Reed plants are gathered & the outer bark is removed & discarded. The inner bark is soaked in water to soften & then hammered with a mallet on a wooden anvil to thin & stretch the bark. Several cloth strips can be beaten together. The stretched barkcloth is set aside to dry with rocks on top to hold the stretch. The dried tapa cloth is painted with traditional geometrical designs. The finished cloth is used for ceremonial clothing, blankets, "wall" privacy & weather protection. Treasured for its decorative value, the cloth is often hung as art.
