This watercolor painting captures the Cristo Chapel church in old San Juan, Puerto Rico, renowned for its healing powers.
The curative powers of La Capilla del Santo Cristo de la Salud relate to an accident during the San Juan Bautista celebrations of 1753. A horse race rider lost control & plunged over the cliff. He miraculously survived, deemed a divine intervention.
On the exact spot where he had fallen off the cliff, the grateful rider built this brick & stone chapel with a bell tower & cross on the roof.
Believers seeking miracles for health ailments bring offerings of “Milagros”, tiny silver replicas of affected body parts. The collection of Milagros was amassed over time & was melted down to create a magnificent altar.
